Hot Topic in Healthcare: Cultural Humility: Critical Strategies in Turbulent Times

This presentation will provide an introduction to Cultural Humility as a philosophy that empowers individuals to effectively engage in interpersonal relationships that are dynamically diverse and mutually respectful.  It will also explore why this philosophy and practice is important in our socio-political context.  Incorporating cultural humility as part of one's lifestyle and workplace empowers the individual to recognize and redress power imbalances within their immediate social and organizational structures to navigate our world better. 

Participants will learn the importance of and/or engaging in:

  • Committed lifelong learning and critical self-reflection
  • Realizing our own power, privilege, and prejudices
  • Practicing humble inquiry and deep listening
  • Redressing imbalances for respectful partnerships
  • Transforming institutions by promoting accountability

Guest Speaker: Vanessa E. Martinez, Ph.D.

Dr. Vanessa E. Martinez is an accomplished anthropologist and educator specializing in community engagement, culturally responsive pedagogy, and health equity. Her extensive administrative experience includes her Honors Program Coordinator role, leading culturally responsive initiatives and collaborative partnerships with regional institutions. Dr. Martinez also serves as the Director of Operations for the , spearheading advocacy and research projects focused on the experiences of women of color. As a recognized consultant and faculty member, she actively contributes to curriculum development and faculty training in equity-focused educational practices. Her civic engagement and health equity leadership have earned her numerous honors, including the Antonia Pantoja Award and the Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award. Fluent in Spanish, Dr. Martinez's work spans academia, non-profit leadership, and community-based participatory research.
